In 1964, the Ford Motor Company introduced its Mustang, and everyone waited anxiously to see how Chevrolet would respond to the sporty, best-selling car. In 1966, Chevrolet responded with its sleek, powerful Camaro, available with either in-line six-cylinder engines or impressive big-block power plants. In 1966 a 350-cubic-inch engine was the standard for the Super Sport option. However, by 1968, several 396-cubic-inch versions were available on the Camaro Super Sport. These muscular power plants were available with 325, 350 or 375 horsepower. Multi-leafed springs and staggered shocks smoothed out the powerful ride, and a redesigned grille and handsome new console enhanced the Camaro's appeal. The Camaro SS was stylish, solid and powerful. And, to many, it was the perfect marriage between high performance and classic design.
